What are the Issues?
I have spent some time over the past four years listening and talking to my constituents, and I have discovered a number of issues that are most often mentioned. Those issues can be separated into four distinct categories: Management, Community Relations, Diversity, and Governance.
Management
Many residents feel that the growth Pooler is experiencing is happening too fast, and they are concerned that not enough green spaces are being adequately preserved. There’s also a sense that city government is not very discerning in its decisions regarding the zoning of commercial and industrial plots, and that variances seem to be easily obtained.
Community Relations
The community would like to see a stronger and more active partnership between the local schools and city government. There’s not enough transparency between the city and the communities they serve.
Diversity
People working in City Hall do not adequately represent the diversity of the Pooler community.
Governance
There are neighborhoods where people feel that their voices and concerns are not being represented on the current Council. More than half of the members of the current council live in two neighborhoods. This leads other communities wondering if they are being adequately represented.
